GLN

Heating and cooling without blown air.

An outdoor heat pump warms or cools water. The water runs through slim aluminium panels on the wall. The room's surfaces settle at the right temperature, and heat moves by radiation.

Not in the room

  1. No vents.

Heat moves by radiation from the panel. Nothing is blown into the room, so there is no draught on your neck.

  2. No ducts.

Water carries the heat. There are no ducts above the ceiling and no grilles in it.

  3. No fan indoors.

No fan and no compressor in the room. The compressor is in the heat pump outside.

  4. No pipes on walls.

Pipes come down inside the wall from the ceiling and join each panel with a single fitting.

  5. No condensation water indoors.

    No condensation water appears indoors.

How it works

Three parts: a heat pump outside, water in pipes, panels on the wall.

Section through a wall with a GLN panel The pipe runs in the ceiling slab, comes down inside the wall and joins the panel with one fitting. The panel stands 90 millimetres off the wall and is 1800 millimetres tall. Heat moves between the panel and the room by radiation. 90 1800 Not to scale

In order

  1. Outside. An air-to-water heat pump warms the water in winter and cools it in summer.
  2. In the walls. The water flows through pipes to the panels and back.
  3. In the room. Walls, floor and furniture settle at the right temperature. You feel the room, not a stream of air.

Why cool walls work

Felt temperature is roughly the average of air and surface temperature (ASHRAE 55, ISO 7730). Cool the surfaces and the room feels cooler, with no cold air aimed at you.

On site

Pipes go in before the plaster. Panels go up last.

  1. Survey. We measure each room and work out how many panels it needs.
  2. Pipes. Before plastering, pipes run through the ceiling and down inside the walls.
  3. Heat pump. The outdoor unit goes on a balcony, a roof or in the yard.
  4. Panels. Each panel goes on the wall and joins the pipe with a single fitting.
  5. Start-up. We fill and test the system, then show you the controls.

None of them shows a GLN project or product. They show the kind of work that happens before a panel goes on a wall.
