Walls that keep the summer out

In the old gardens of Suzhou, summer comfort came from the buildings. Thick whitewashed walls stayed cool through the afternoon. Grey tile roofs held the shade. Stone paths and still water kept the ground cool underfoot.

People sat close to those surfaces and felt cooler, with no air moving at all. Your body trades heat with every surface around it, not only with the air.

How warm a room feels

What you feel is roughly the average of the air temperature and the temperature of the surfaces around you. Heating and ventilation standards (ASHRAE 55, ISO 7730) describe it the same way.

So a room with cool walls feels cool even when the air is a few degrees warmer, and nothing has to blow at you to get there.

The same idea, indoors

Walk through. On the other side, GLN does what the garden did: it sets the temperature of the surfaces around you and leaves the air alone.

Comfort from the surfaces of a room, not from blown air.

How GLN does it

An outdoor heat pump warms or cools water. The water flows through slim aluminium-fin panels on your walls. The panels bring the room’s surfaces to the right temperature, and heat moves by radiation, not by blowing air.

  • No vents, no ducts

    Nothing is cut into ceilings or floors to move air, and nothing blows at you.

  • No fan and no compressor in the room

    The compressor sits in the outdoor heat pump. Indoors, the panels have no moving parts to hum.

  • Pipes you never see

    Water pipes come down inside the wall from the ceiling and join each panel with a single fitting. None of it shows on the wall.

  • No condensation water appears indoors.

    The same panels cool the room through Wuhan’s humid summer and warm it through the damp winter.

What you notice is what’s missing

No draft on your neck. No fan noise at night. No air blown across the bed or the sofa. The room holds the temperature you set, and stays quiet while it does.

Four seasons in the garden

Wuhan summers are hot and humid, and its winters are damp and cold. The same panels cool the room in one and warm it in the other.
