January The panels run warm, and the walls and floor near them are gently warm too. Warmth reaches you from the surfaces, not from a stream of air.

May Outside comes within a few degrees of the room. On many days you can simply open a window.

July The walls and ceiling sit a little cooler than you, and your body gives heat to them quietly. No vents, no draft. No condensation water appears indoors.

September The air outside cools back toward the room. Windows open again for a few weeks.

What the room is doing

An outdoor heat pump warms or cools water. The water runs through slim aluminium-fin panels on your walls, the surfaces of the room settle at the temperature you set, and heat moves by radiation rather than by blowing air.

There are no vents and no ducts, and no fan or compressor in the room. The pipes come down inside the wall from the ceiling and join each panel with a single fitting, so none of them show on the walls.

A typical panel is 600 × 1800 mm and stands 90 mm off the wall. It gives about 510 W of heating or 420 W of cooling. Demo figures.

December to February

In winter, the walls do the warming

Warm water runs through the panels, and over a few hours the walls and floor near them settle a little above the air. You feel it the way you feel sun through glass: on your face and hands, without a current of air across the room, and without a fan humming at night.

June to September

In summer, the walls stay a little cooler than you

Cool water runs through the same panels. The walls and ceiling settle a few degrees below the air, and your body gives heat to them the way you feel cool beside a stone wall in the shade. No cold air falls on your neck, and no condensation water appears indoors.

Rain and damp

Wuhan is damp in January and damp in July. Radiant panels change the temperature of the room’s surfaces and don’t blow air, so damp air isn’t pushed across you, and no condensation water appears indoors.
